Las circunstancias que condujeron al ataque francés a
Cartagena fueron dictadas por un capítulo más en las
guerras incesantes por la hegemonía que definen la
historia de los reinos y las naciones de Europa.
Durante los últimos años del siglo XVII, cualquier
posesión española en el caribe era un objetivo
posible para que piratas franceses invadieran bajo su
bandera nacional, porque en Europa la casa francesa
de Bourbon estaba involucrada en un conflicto dinástico
sanguinario prolongado con la casa austríaca de
los Habsburgo y España era en esa época una parte
integral del imperio austríaco.
En el año de 1496, habiendo establecido los inicios
del estado moderno español y un imperio colonial,
Isabel de Castilla y su esposo, Fernando de Aragón,
adquirieron aún más poder dentro de Europa al
arreglar el matrimonio de su hija Juana con un
príncipe Habsburgo, Felipe, que era el hijo del
emperador Maximiliano I, creando así una alianza
política con la familia dinástica más poderosa de Europa
en ese entonces que duraría más de 200 años.
Juana la Loca, loca de amor
La historia personal de Juana es triste. Juana era

inteligente, perceptiva, erudita y piadosa. Hablaba
latín con fluidez, bailaba con gracia inesperada y
tocaba la guitarra y el clavicordio. Y estaba locamente
enamorada de su príncipe Habsburgo que era conocido
como “Felipe el Hermoso.” Pero Felipe, que no tenía
nada del refinamiento cultural de Juana, no tenía ningún
interés en absoluto en ella excepto por el uso de su
útero para engendrar un heredero.

During the final years of the 17 th century, any
Spanish possession in the Caribbean was a possible
target for French pirates invading under their
national banner, because in Europe the French House
of Bourbon was involved in a prolonged sanguinary
dynastic conflict with the Austrian House of
Habsburg and Spain was at that time an integral
part of the Austrian empire.
In the year 1496, having established the beginnings
of the modern Spanish state and a colonial empire,
Isabel of Castile and her spouse, Ferdinand of Aragón,
acquired even more power within Europe by
arranging the marriage of their daughter Juana to a
Habsburg prince, Philip, who was the son of
Emperor Maximilian I, thus creating a political
alliance with the then most powerful dynastic family
in Europe which would last for over 200 years.
Crazy Jane, Crazy for Love
Juana’s personal story is a sad one. Juana was

intelligent, perceptive, erudite and pious. She spoke

in love with her Habsburg prince who was known
as “Philip the Beautiful.” But Philip, who had none
of Juana’s cultural refinement, had absolutely no
