La expedición francesa de ataque zarpó de Brest a
mediados de enero de 1697. Inicialmente la flota estaba
compuesta de solo siete galeones fuertemente armados,
acompañados de tres fragatas medianas de maniobra
rápida que servían de naves de combate y escolta, y
un surtido de barcos de apoyo más pequeños. En total,
estas naves llevaban 4.015 hombres, con 110 oficiales,

collective effort of the citizens of the port of
Brest and their backers throughout France. However,
once Louis XIV got involved the object of the
expedition changed fundamentally because Louis
never stopped thinking on a grand scale (or
expansively, in a manner of speaking: Louis’s Palace
of Versailles had seven hundred rooms in case some
friends might want to stay the night). Instead of being
limited to a massive lightning strike operation to rob
the riches of Cartagena, the ultimate objective became
something more: invasion and colonization. De Pointis
had an explicit secret mandate from his sovereign to
eventually to keep them for good.” In light of

In French Hispaniola
The French attack expedition set sail from Brest in
mid-January of 1697. Initially the fleet was
composed of just seven heavily armed galleons,
accompanied by three rapid, maneuverable mid-size
frigates which served as combat and escort ships, and
an assortment of smaller supporting barks. In total,
