Los bucaneros: un grupo variopinto
Los bucaneros originales eran de ascendencia francesa
principalmente. No eran miembros de ninguna secta
religiosa que se refugiara en una nueva tierra,
ni hugonotes, ni puritanos, ni calvinistas, ni
católicos. Eran cazadores aguerridos viviendo al
margen de la ley y de la sociedad tal como era en las
Antillas Mayores a mediados del siglo XVII, hombres
que no tenían lealtad a ninguna corona o nación; en
otras palabras, matreros bien armados.
Aparecieron por primera vez, empezando en 1623, en las
partes deshabitadas de La Española donde gran número
de ganado silvestre y de jabalíes salvajes eran cazados
por su cuero y su carne. Toda la carcasa del animal,
o secciones de ella, se asaba en un espetón sobre un
fuego en un pozo abierto –o sea, estilo barbacoa– y la
carne se colgaba luego en una parrilla o marco de
madera, llamado buccan en la lengua arahuaca nativa de
la isla, y se ahumaba con el propósito de preservar
la carne. En francés, el que utiliza el buccan es un
boucanier y de eso vienen las palabras bucanero en
español y buccaneer en inglés .

Cuando los bucaneros expandieron sus operaciones al
campo más lucrativo de la piratería, adquirieron un
suministro regular de especias muy valiosas robadas de
los barcos de carga –especias tales como canela, comino,
jengibre, ajo, paprika y nuez moscada– y estos

The Buccaneers: A Motley Crew
The original buccaneers were mainly of French
descent. They were not members of any religious

Catholics. They were tough hunters living on the
margins of the law and society such as it was in the

Greater Antilles in the middle of the17 century, men
who were without loyalty to any crown or nation; in
other words, well armed brigands.
They first
appeared, beginning in 1623, in the
uninhabited parts of Hispaniola where large numbers
of feral cattle and wild boars were hunted
for their hides and meat. The whole animal carcass,
or sections of it, was roasted on a spit over a
fire in an open pit – that is, barbeque style – and the
meat was later hung on a wooden gridiron or
frame, called a buccan in the native Arawak tongue of
the island, and smoked for the purpose of preserving
the meat. In French, one who uses the buccan is a

When the buccaneers expanded their operations into
the more lucrative field of piracy, they acquired a
regular supply of very valuable spices robbed from
the cargo ships – spices such as cinnamon, cumin,
ginger root, garlic, paprika, and nutmeg – and these
